Trip Overview
If communing with nature is equally important to you, together with conquering the altitude, then the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake and Cho La Pass is the one for you. It’s one of the finest alternatives to trekkers, seeking the ultimate Everest base camp trekking experience; without having to tread the normally jam-packed, regular base camp trail. The combination: Everest base camp –the base camp of the highest mountain in the world, Kala Patthar- the best Everest view point, Cho La Pass- one of the three Everest High Passes, Gokyo Lakes – series of glacier-fed lakes and Gokyo RI- 5,360m high peak, is simply unbeatable and makes this detour (west of Everest) more scenic, serene, challenging and completely worth your time and effort.
Our 18 days Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake and Chola Pass trek is a walk to the base camp of the Mt. Everest and Gokyo Lake via Chola Pass and back, after a day tour of the attractions in the Kathmandu Valley. It’s a teahouse trek that starts with a scenic flight to Lukla. From Lukla, you will continue to the base camp on a regular base camp trail and return, taking an alternative route via Chola Pass and Gokyo Lake. Including the arrival, departure, city tour and 2 acclimatization days (at Namche and Dingboche), the entire trip is successfully completed in 18 days.
Kindly check the Cost Details to understand the services and the benefits guaranteed by our standard 18 days Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake and Chola Pass package. If the given details do not match your requirements, the package can be tailored to meet your specifications, with 100% departure guarantee on all personalized packages.
Compared to the regular 15 days Everest Base Camp Trek, this trekking in the Everest region of Nepal is more challenging. Therefore, we suggest you prepare your mind and body and choose the right season, autumn (mid-September to November) and spring (March to mid-May) to increase the success rate. Nevertheless, if you are a challenge freak, then our Everest Three High Passes Trek – 19 days is always the perfect option for you.
Please Note:
Due to obstructive weather conditions (even during the best trekking seasons), sometimes they may announce sudden changes regarding the previously provided domestic flight schedule to and from Lukla. The plane many be delayed for few hours or even few following days. This entirely depends upon the weather condition. In order to cope with this situation, AME Treks and Expedition, kindly requests all the trekkers to add a few extra days to your plan. Nevertheless, if everything goes well, we can also make arrangements for you to enjoy other attractions like bungee jumping, jungle safari, rafting, shopping and so on.
Furthermore, trekker’s safety is always the top priority in any trek. Therefore, the team leader, on duty, is given every authority to make changes in the itinerary provided, in case of unexpected weather change, unsuitable health condition of a group member or an unforeseen natural disaster. If needed, team leader might also cancel any part of the itinerary. Hence, in such situations we request you co-operate with our team leader and remain flexible.
Due to the air traffic in Kathmandu International Airport, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) decided to operate Lukla flights to/from Manthali Airport Ramechhap during major trekking seasons. For this autumn, 2022, It is likely that all the flights to/from Lukla will be operated from Ramechhap airport from 1st October. Ramechhap is about 130 km northeast of Kathmandu and takes about 4 hours and 30 min drive. As the flight to Lukla will be in the morning, we should be there on time./ To make sure we would like to do half day city tour on day 3 and drive to Ramechap in the evening. Spend a night near the airport and the next morning fly to Lukla. We will organize a private transfer to/from Kathmandu to Ramechhap for Lukla flight.

Once you arrive, a representative from our company will be there to meet you. As soon as you arrive at the airport, our company representative will be waiting to meet you as you exit the building and take you and your luggage in a private vehicle to your hotel. Upon reaching the hotel, you can start relaxing as soon as you get to your hotel. Prepare yourself for the pre-trek briefing after a while so you can hear all the information about the trip and ask questions if you have any. On this day, you will also get ready by organizing your clothing and packing list in order. Later in the evening, we will go out for the dinner. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to get to know the other members of your group as well as the tour guides and crew. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 02: Sightseeing tour in the Kathmandu Valley (1,300m/4,264ft) You'll be exploring Kathmandu's world-famous monuments today. We will introduce our guide and start our Kathmandu sightseeing trip after an early-morning brunch. All of the sites you will be visiting today are listed in the UNESCO world heritage Site: Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. After you've successfully toured each of these locations, you'll arrive at your hotel. Again you can review your packing list when you get to your hotel. And if required, you can start making the extra preparations recommended by your guide. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 03: Fly to Lukla (30-35min) and trek to Phakding (2,610m/8,562ft) - 4 hours Today is your first day trekking in the Everest region. But foremostly it's also your flight day. It's not just an ordinary flight, it's a flight in one of the most dangerous airports in the world. You get to fly to Lukla from the domestic airport in Kathmandu or Ramechap. It will just take you 30 to 35 minutes to take this flight. If all of the conditions are right, you will get to enjoy the A-one view of the Himalayas and the most beautiful landscape one could ever possibly get from the air. On the other side, the assistant and porters who will accompany you on your journey will be waiting for you until you get there at the airport. Soon as you come off the plane, you will hand over your pack to the porter. Then you'll head out for the breakfast with your guide near Lukla airport. Shortly after your breakfast, we will start our trek. First, we go through the narrow passage that crosses Lukla village. From there, we will head towards the Pasang Lhamo Memorial gate while passing through stores, teahouses, and Buddhist prayer flags. After that, the path will lead us to the Chaurikharka village, which is beneath the Dudhkoshi River, and eventually to the Phakding village, our final destination for the day. Overnight at the hotel in Phakding village.
Day 04: Trek from Phakding to Namche (3,440m/11,286ft) 6-7 hours Today you will reach the gateway of the Everest region. The walk along the Dudhkoshi River's banks on this day will be fascinating as you'll get to pass several suspension bridges along the way. Soon as we will cross the river we will approach the Monjo Village. At Monjo, you will have to obtain the Permit for the National Park. For that, your particular guide will take care of the details you need to submit to receive the permits. You will then continue on the path that gradually descends to the Dudh Koshi River bridge after entering the park. Following a successful bridge crossing, you will descend to the pine path and stone-paved path. While heading along the way and before ultimately arriving at the Namche Bazaar, you may take in the natural beauty of the surrounding forest and peaceful surroundings. Namche Bazaar is a unique town with practically all the comforts of a modern neighborhood. Once there, you may have a rest in the lodge, explore Namche town, or visit the bakeries and internet cafés. Stay the night in a Lodge at Namche.
Day 05: Acclimatization day in Namche Today we go on a short trip while taking a break for adequate acclimatization. We'll go on a full-day, guided acclimatization walk that goes via Syangboche, Khunde, Khumjung, and Namche Bazaar. This trip will be enjoyable and will take you up to 4–5 hours. This walk will begin shortly after breakfast in Namche. After exploring these places and ending in Khumjung, we'll take the less crowded route back to Namche through the Everest View Hotel. You will need to ascend the steep path for an hour to get to the Everest View Hotel from there. The greatest views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku can be seen from the hilltop, therefore your effort and struggle will finally pay you off. After finishing the journey, you'll eventually descend to Namche Bazaar. Thenafter, you may use the remaining time to explore Namche's many cafes, shops, bakeries, and restaurants. Notably, this trip will significantly improve your acclimatization as it adheres to the rule "Climb high, sleep low." Beside this trip, it's also okay if you need to relax completely to recover from the tiredness of the trek. Overnight at a lodge in Namche Bazaar. (Please note: For acclimatization hike, your team leader might also choose to take you to the village of Thame, located northwest of Namche.)
Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860m/12,664ft) - 5 hours The moment has come to set off from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche. Finally, we will go up to Tengboche village after taking a break at Namche bazaar. Roughly, it would take us around 5 hours to reach Tengboche. On this path, you will pass through the sides of various valleys as you enter and depart them. On the course, you will also experience both hill climbs and descent. We'll spend some time walking up the ridge before arriving at Phunkithanka and the DudhKoshi River. To reach Tengboche, we will then ascend after crossing the river. After finally reaching Tengboche and checking into Lodge, you'll get the opportunity to explore some of the oldest Tibetan monasteries in the country with the breathtaking background of Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. After taking in the scenery, you will return to the lodge in Tengboche for the night.
Day 07: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410m/14,468ft) 3-4.5 hours You may visit the Tengboche monastery in the early morning and, if you'd like, you can offer prayers and get blessings. Then after the delightful breakfast, our adventure continues from Tengboche. Further, you will slowly descend on stone stairs from Tengboche through a pine and rhododendron forest before crossing the bridge over the Imja River at Chaturje. After crossing the bridge, we'll head straight up to Pangboche Village and then continue to Somare, which is located slightly over 4000 meters. Our lunch stop for the day will be at Somare. You keep going on the flat trail past Orsho by crossing the second bridge. You will ascend for around 30 minutes along the Imja River on the same trail before arriving in Dingboche. Once you arrive in Dingboche, check into the lodge and then spend the remainder of the day observing the town. Overnight at the lodge in Dingboche.
Day 08: Acclimatization day in Dingboche This is the second Acclimatization day of our trip. Like the previous acclimatization day, we are going to do an acclimatization hike nearby on this day. You may either take a day trip up to the Chukkhung or you can hike to Nangka Tsang Gompa and the viewpoint right above it. If you choose to take a gentle ascend to the Nangkar Tsang Gompa, you may enjoy the views of the Tshang hermitage and the breathtaking views of Cholatse and Taboche. You can also take a look at the lakes that are located at the foot of Ama Dablam, along with scenes of Chuukhung and Mount Makalu. You will arrive at the lodge in Dingboche for the overnight stay following the acclimatization trek.
Day 09: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910m/16,108ft) - 5 hours After a full-day acclimatization, Lobuche is the destination for today. After eating breakfast, you will leave for the ascent that rises to the ridge through the villages of Dusa and Palrung Kharka to connect with the Pheriche Trail. As you go to this connection, the views of Taboche, Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and Kantega give you a great sense of accomplishment. Soon as we hike down, we will reach Dugla after making the short descent and crossing the glacial stream on a wooden bridge. We'll stop here for a quick break and have lunch in a teahouse for a bit. We will then resume our ascent to the top of the ridge, which will probably take an hour, though it might be less or longer depending on our pace. After reaching the top, you will continue to the northern side for a view of the beautiful Mount Pumori. Going forward, you will have to cross the challenging loose moraine of the Khumbu Glacier before finally reaching Lobuche. Once you arrive in Lobuche, check into the lodge and then spend the remaining time exploring neighboring ridges to take in the stunning mountain scenery. Overnight at a lodge in Lobuche.
Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep-Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,598ft) and return to Gorak Shep (5,140m/16,863ft) - 8.5 hours You have a challenging walk ahead of you today as you must reach the mighty Everest base camp. Following your full meal, your trek shall continue. The journey will start from a challenging, constrained path that winds between the mountain wall and the Khumbu Glacier's later moraine. Then from the trail, you will head to the north side towards Gorakshep. In general, the route you are taking to reach Gorakshep is rocky and steep. Trekkers can have a greater struggle as a result of this. Trekkers are advised to take extra precautions while the route also has low oxygen levels at this height. Once you arrive at the Gorakshep lodge, you will check in, leave your stuff there, eat lunch, and then go to the Everest base camp. After walking over boulders and rock paths from Gorakshep, you will eventually reach the base camp, which is situated below the Khumbu Icefall. Being at the foot of Everest is exciting, and it is an experience that every trekker will never forget. So, we'll make the most of our time in base camp by taking some pictures, admiring the view, and celebrating our achievements as a way to remember this special moment as a group. We'll spend about an hour in Everest base camp, and then head back to Gorakshep. You will travel along the same path you used to get to Everest Base Camp on your way back to Gorak Shep. Once you get to Gorakshep, you can spend a while relaxing. Overnight at the Hotel in Gorakshep.
Day 11: Hike from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,550m) and trek to Dzongla (4,830m/15,846ft) 6-7 hours You were in Everest base camp the day before, but you were unable to see Everest. You will see it today from a far better perspective, so don't worry. From the Gorakshep, it takes roughly two hours to walk to Kalapatthar. Kalapatthar welcomes you with fluttering Buddhist prayer flags, just like other vistas in the Everet region. Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, and Mount Everest can all be seen in all their magnificence from this location. Also, from the top of Kala Patthar, you can see the spectacular Gorak Shep, Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, and Everest Base Camp. We take our time capturing the magnificent vistas of the mighty mountains and their surroundings. We will enjoy the sunlight kissing Mount Everest while remaining at Kala Patthar and descend to Gorakshep after a while for Breakfast. After having a delightful breakfast in Gorakshep we will head back towards Lobuche, where we follow the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The route is steep till a few miles and it goes downward, which makes a walk much easier. After a smooth descent, the trails get more steep and small which goes through the skirt of the hill. These few last hours will be proven difficult with the continuous uphill walk to reach Dzongla. After finally reaching Dzongla you will check into the lodge and relax to heal from the tiring day. Overnight at the lodge in Dzongla.
Day 12: Trek from Dzongla to Thaknak (4,700m/15,419ft) via Cho La Pass (5,420m) 7-8 hours Today you will start your day earlier than usual. So, accordingly, breakfast will also be provided early to you. After breakfast, we will swiftly depart Dzongla with a packed meal and some warm clothing. The starting of the trek will be not too hard. At the start, you will go through the black boulders and then we continue further to cross some streams to make a climb over the rocks. We will continue our ascent to Chola Pass through dangerous ice routes that follow the Chola Glacier. Soon after, you will arrive at the pass's top, where vibrant prayer flags are fluttering in the sky. The view of the mountains like Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and Ngozumpa glacier looks stunning from this place. We will take in the scenery for a while and feel more proud of ourselves for ascending one of the three high passes in the Everest region. Then after we descend from the pass to the next side of the rocky path at the base of the cliff. From this cliff, you will climb to the valley to the ridge where you will be leaving the pass area and continuously hiking down for almost 1.5 hours to the hillside. From here onwards you will move forward on a relatively much easier trail to Thangnak. After finally reaching Thangnak, you will check into the lodge at Thagnak for a good meal and a good sleep.
Day 13: Trek from Thaknak to Gokyo (4,790m/15,715ft) 2.5-3 hours and Climb to Gokyo Ri (5,360m) - 4 hours Trek via Chola pass was hard, but today the trek is even more hard. Although the trek duration is low today, the difficulty is not compromised. Today you will trek across the steep, narrow valley and the Ngozumpa glacier. You will need to cross the glacier once more to reach the inner side of the moraine, where we continue to go further up to that moraine. Before We head out for Gokyo we will check in at the lodge on the route, where we will also have lunch. After having lunch we will head out for the Gokyo-Ri (5360m). After doing a continuous hike for 2 hours we reach at the summit of the peak. The Gokyo-Ri summit is decorated with vibrant Buddhist flags, and the territory around it is graced with a breathtaking vista of Mt. Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche. Also, you'll get a very interesting sight of lakes, glaciers, and the small settlement of Gokyo from the peak. Spend some time wandering around the peak and hike down to Gokyo for an overnight stay.
Day 14: Trek from Gokyo to Dole (4,200m/13,779ft) 5-6 hours The same path that passes across the Ngozumpa glacier's lateral moraine will be your destination as soon as you finish your morning breakfast. You will continue onwards to the Phangga settlement after leaving the moraine. From Phangga, you will continue to the ridge, and then proceed to the hilltop. You may enjoy breathtaking views of the Kantega and Thamserku peaks as well as various Tibetan Chortens throughout the route to this mountaintop. You will descend from this hilltop to Machhermo, which is located just below the moraine of the Ngozumpa glacier. After Macchermo, we'll also pass via the villages of Luza and Lhabarma before ultimately arriving in the welcoming village of Dole. Dole is a tiny settlement situated beside the Gokyo River. You will enjoy the view of many mountains of the region as you descend to Dole Village. Overnight stay at a lodge in Dole.
Day 15: Trek from Dole to Namche (3,440m/11,286ft) 4-5 hour After a hearty breakfast today, we will proceed to trek toward Namche Bazaar. While enjoying the breathtaking vistas of rhododendron, wildflowers, and waterfalls, we will descend the steep trail to Phortse Thanga. Passing through the zigzag trail you will also get the chance to visit the birthplace of Lama Sange Dorje before reaching Mong. Once you reach Mong, You can also admire the best views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kangtega, and Taboche. From here you will join the trail junction to Sanasa. The trail will then pass by the Kyangjuma mountain's forested slopes as you continue forward. Finally, we will see Lhotse, Everest, and Tengboche for the final time after we arrive at Namche Army Camp. We are only a kilometer away from Namche Bazaar from here. Once at Namche Bazaar , check into the lodge and relax for a while before dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 16: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,840m/9,317ft) - 6 hours After having breakfast in Namche, we will descend via rugged paths and pass under numerous suspension bridges before settling on a good track. It will take us 2 hours to reach monjo and 3.5 hours to reach Phakding from Namche Bazaar. Altogether, it would take a total of six to seven hours to reach Lukla from Namche Bazaar. Soon after arriving in Lukla, you'll check into the lodge and spend the rest of the time celebrating your successes and remembering the special times you shared with your team buddies along the way. Overnight in a lodge at Lukla.
Day 17: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft) 30-35 minutes You will eat your final breakfast at the Land of Sherpas in the early morning while you get ready for the trip. Once again, we will board the magnificent flight and soar over breathtaking mountains and rolling hills till we arrive in Kathmandu. Once you arrive in Kathmandu, a private vehicle will take you right away to the hotel. The rest of your time in the city is then up to you. We will arrange a farewell dinner for you later that evening as a goodbye present.
