Gosainkunda is a holy and popular lake which is located at an altitude of4,380 m (14,370 ft) above sea level. It lies in the Rasuwa district. It is also known as The Frozen Lake and is a major religious site. The Gosainkunda holy lake melts and flows down to form theTrisuli River and remains frozen for six months in winter. There are many other lakes in this area as well. This area is very popular for both Hindus and Buddhists. Its holy water is considered particularly significant during Gangadashahara and the sacred thread festival Janai Purnima. At that time, thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area. Gosaikunda is believed to have formed from the digging of the land by theTrisul (holy three-pointed sword) of lord Shiva after he drank the poison from Samudra Manthan and desperately wanted cold water to quench the overwhelming heat, according to Hindu Mythology.
