Most of the trekkers coming to Nepal might have already known about the renowned regions like Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu. Apart from these regions, most of the trekkers don't want to put the effort to hear about other regions. So by doing that, they might be missing out on what they were looking for. But, there is nothing to worry about. As long as we are here, we will always be presenting you with new trekking adventures in different regions of the country. Likewise, this time, we are presenting you the most unexplored trek in the far western region that is, the Api base camp Trek.

The Api Base Camp Trek is an adventurous journey that takes you to Mount Api's base camp, which is one of the tallest peaks in Nepal's far-western region. For trekkers, this moderate 15-day journey offers a special off-the-beaten-path experience that is different from the other region of trekking. Primarily, the trek starts at the village of Gokuleshwor in the Baitadi District. From here, the trek journey begins where you'll set out on a solitary, challenging trail that goes across uninhabited plains.

As you slowly go through the Api Nampa Conservation Area, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the neighboring Himalayan ranges and the area's pristine nature beauty. Along with the mountain views, the region is also renowned for its rich biodiversity. It is home to rare animals that include snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, and several bird species. We want to make sure that the rocky landscape, lush woods, and alpine meadows are gifts for you on this trekking journey.

Another delight of this journey to Api Base Camp is you get a chance to really immerse yourselves in the regional culture. You'll come across remote settlements along the path where you may talk to the welcoming residents and learn about their way of life in the past and present. Moreover, you can also make your trekking experience deeper and richer through the distinct cultural history of the far western region. Mostly you can be indulged in the regional customs, traditions, and food.

In general, the Api Base Camp Trek is a moderate and rewarding adventure that combines breathtaking mountain panoramas, far-flung landscapes, rich wildlife, and cultural immersion. Undoubtedly, it is the perfect option for thrill-seekers who want to go off the beaten route and discover the undiscovered wonders of Nepal's far-western region.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, pre-briefing for the trek (1,300m/4,264ft)

Today is your day of arrival in Kathmandu. After you land in the capital of Nepal, a representative of our company will meet and greet you there and you'll be driven to your accommodation. After you've had some downtime at your hotel, our representative will take you for a brief trip briefing. You will go through every detail of the trip over the API base camp trek during this brief conversation.

After a full breakdown of the specifics of the trek, you will be welcomed in a traditional Nepali dinner with a cultural dance performance in the city. Here, we will be happy to see you socializing with the other employees and guests here. Following your meal, we will take you to the accommodations so you can spend the night.

Day 2: Fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 1 hour 15 mins

After breakfast at the hotel in Kathmandu, you will head towards the domestic airport and catch a flight to Dhangadi. Dhangadi is situated in the far western region of Nepal in Kailali District. Upon reaching here, you will then be transferred to the tourist standard hotel, specially booked for you. You will have some time to refresh following hotel check-in. Then, after a brief delay, we will go on to see the village's interesting attractions, which include a bicycle tour of the lake and the botanical gardens. Moreover, we'll also pay a visit to the nearby Aircraft Museum. After we complete the excursion, we will return to our accommodation by bicycle in Dhangadi for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Drive from Dhangadhi to Gokuleshwar 8 hours

Today, we will leave the Terai region's plains and proceed into the hilly region. After driving for 8 hours we will reach Gokuleshwor from Dhangadi through Mahakali highway. To start this drive you will get up early. As soon as you are ready, we will transfer you to the bus station to catch a bus. Some moments after being on the bus you will be taken for breakfast and continuing on you will stop at Dadheldhura for lunch.

After having lunch you will set the journey uphill enjoying the views of the Himalayas, villages, rivers, and valleys. Following the long journey, we will finally reach Gokuleshwor in the afternoon time. After arriving, you may use the remainder of your time resting in accommodations or exploring the surrounding region. Overnight at the lodge in Gokuleshwor.

Day 4: Drive from Gokuleshwar to Latinath (1,004m) for 2 hours and trek to Paribagar (1,770m/5,807ft) for 1 hour

On this 4th of the journey, you will again take a drive from Gokuleshwor to Latinath. From Gokuleshwor it would take you about 2 hours to reach Latinath going along the chameliya river. Finally, you will reach Latinath and begin your journey toward the Api base camp. Upon reaching you will take a break for a while and start approaching Paribagar. From Latinath, it will take you around an hour to reach Paribagar through an uphill route. You will reach Paribagar too early, giving you enough time to chill around the village and explore the surroundings. Overnight at the lodge in Paribagar.

Day 5: Trek from Paribagar to Makarigaad (1,470m/4,822ft) 5 hours

Today we will start our trek to Makrigaad after breakfast at Paribagar. As we go through towns and into the middle of hills, we'll look at stone structures and typical far-western agricultural lands. After walking for two and a half hours here, we will take a short break at one of the teahouses along the route. Then, we will continue our trek through the Chameliya River and into a forest with fir, oak, hemlock, and rhododendrons before arriving in Makrigaad just after lunch. After two hours of trekking, we will ultimately arrive at this lovely town of Makarigadi. Overnight at the homestay facility in Makrigaad.

Day 6: Trek from Makrigaad to Siti (2,254m/7,395ft) 8 hours

Following breakfast, the journey starts with a brief, sharp hike in the direction of the Chameliya River. Continuing on, you must ascend the gorge to reach the settlement of Pato, which is quite away from this place. After reaching Pato you will wait for a while as you will be having lunch here. Finishing your lunch, you will then continue your ascent from Pato over a gradual and steady path. Until we reach the top point, we'll keep ascending along the solid path. And finally, after you get there, you'll take a short, easy stroll southward to the picturesque town of Siti. Overnight at the homestay facility in Siti village.

Day 7: Trek from Siti to Domal (2,950m/9,678ft) 7 hours

Today we will leave Siti for Domal after eating breakfast. First, we'll descend a hill into the settlement of Khayekot for lunch, which is close to the Chameliya River. After breakfast, you will gradually make your way up to Domal. To reach here, you will only need 7 hours of trekking from Siti. Particularly, Domal is the confluence of the rivers Chameliya and Rokap, which is considered a holy site in this region by the people. As this area does not offer any type of accommodation choices, we will have to set up the tent for an overnight stay.

Day 8: Trek from Domal to Dhaulo Odar (lower Api Base Camp) (3,548m/11,640ft) 5 hours

After breakfast, you'll continue on your adventure toward Dhaulo Odar, which is one of the trip's highlights and is also known as Lower Api Nampa Base Camp. First, you will climb a steep uphill which will lead you to the top. And from here onwards, you will pass through the relatively easy path and go through forests and pastures. Walking for about 5 hours will then lead you to the open fields which are surrounded by mountains, forests, and caves. This grassland is called Dhaulo Odar and here, we will set up our camp and stay overnight.

Day 9: Trek from Daulo Odar to Api Base Camp/Pilkandaha (3,861m/12,667ft) and back to Daulo Odar

Today is the most anticipated day as you will be reaching your ultimate destination. After breakfast, we will set off on our ultimate adventure while carrying a packed lunch. From Daulo Odar, it takes around 2.5 hours of climbing uphill to get to a large, wide plateau that is surrounded by mountains which is ultimately referred to as Api base camp. From here, we can see the fabulous Mt. Api, Mt. Nampa, and Mt. Bobaye in their entirety.

Finally after enjoying the beautiful views, we will go to the source of the Chameliya River and also visit the temple. After touring the temple, we will visit the sacred lake Pilkandaha and eat lunch there shortly. After fully exploring the lake while enjoying a short break, we will go to Daulo Odar for an overnight stay.

Day 10: Trek from Daulo Odar to Siti (2,258m/7,408ft) 6 hours

Today is your last day in the stunning Mt. Api region. Right after breakfast, you will start your return trip to Siti. First, the trail will bring you down to Khayekot. Thenafter you will take a lunch break here and follow the uphill path towards Siti. Along the route, you will be tagged along by the beautiful terraced farmland and the hills. Finally enjoying the great views of the surrounding you will arrive at Siti where you will be staying in a homestay facility.

Day 11: Trek from Siti to Makrigadi (1,470m/4,822ft) 6 hours

After having your breakfast in Siti, the path will start to take you toward the top of the ridge above Siti. The path ascends and passes through woodland, terraced farms, and small villages as it proceeds from the ridge. As you continue on the road, you will also have the opportunity to take in vistas of the Himalayas before arriving at Pato for lunch. After lunch, our last approach will be a steady descent that will lead us to Makrigadi village.

Day 12: Trek from Makarigadi to Latinath (4 hours) and drive to Gokuleshwar (2 hours)

Today, from Makarigadi we will retrace our steps back to Latinath. After walking for almost about 4 hours we will arrive at Latinath. As you come down you will feel, the trail to Latinath is less strenuous and easier to travel. After exploring the local attractions there, you'll board a bus and head towards Gokuleswor. You will be taken right away from the bus stop to a lodge in Gokuleshwar where you will spend the night.

Day 13: Drive from Gokuleshwar to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 9 hours

We have to get up early today since we need to board a bus to Dhangadi once more. We will be traveling from our lodgings to the bus terminal immediately following breakfast. As how we came, we will follow the same road to reach Dhangadi again. Following the terraced farms, villages, and hills we will reach Dadheldhuraa by afternoon. Here, we will have our lunch and make our way directly toward Dhangadhi through Mahakali Highway. Finally, after 9 hours of driving, we will reach Dhangadi and instantly check in at the hotel for the rest and dinner. Overnight at the hotel in Dhangadhi.

Day 14: Fly from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

After having a morning breakfast at the hotel in Dhangadhi we will head towards Dhangadi airport to board a flight back to Kathmandu. Being in for more than hours on a flight you will get to see many of the different landscape views of the surroundings. Finally, after you land at the Domestic airport we will transfer you to your accommodation facility. You can relax for a bit at this hotel so that later in the day you can visit local markets or restaurants. Finally, after you get to the hotel, you'll have some time to reflect on your journey. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Departure day

Today marks the end of your trek to the API base camp, and you will give this gorgeous alpine nation your final farewell.
