There is a gem hidden in the far northwestern region  of Nepal. It is named Mt. Api. It’s a snow capped shimmering white gem that  rises 7,132m above the sea level. Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

One of the company representatives will be awaiting your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). This person will greet you and take you to the hotel booked for you in Kathmandu, in a private vehicle. You can freshen up and rest for some time. Around the afternoon, we will meet you at our office in Kathmandu for a short meeting. At the meeting you will be introduced to your guide and the team member and also briefed regarding the itinerary. After the meeting, in the evening, we will take you to one of the famous typical Nepali restaurants for welcome dinner hosted by the company. Here, along with the dinner, you will also get to enjoy ethnic dance and cultural music. Nevertheless, if your flight is scheduled to arrive late, the dinner and the meeting will be postponed for the next day. Overnight is a tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu. (D)

Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 1 hour 15 mins

Today, after breakfast at the hotel, a private vehicle will transfer us from the hotel to the airport in Kathmandu, where we will board a flight to Dhangadhi. About  1 hour and 15 minute flight will take us to Dhangadhi. It’s a very scenic flight. From the Dhangadhi, we will be transferred to the hotel, where we can freshen up and then set off on a bicycle trip to explore Jokhar Lake, Botanical Garden and the Aircraft Museum. The exhibition of photo gallery, models of aircrafts and the cockpit experience are the attractions of the Aircraft Museum, while the lake and the garden  are ‘not-to-be-missed’ sites of Dhangadhi. Moreover, you can experience the landscape, climate and settlement of the Terai plain located in the far western region of Nepal. After exploring these areas, we will get back to the hotel . Overnight in a tourist standard hotel in Dhangadhi. (B,L,D)

Day 03: Drive from Dhangadhi to Gokuleshwar 8 hours

Today, we will drive from Dhangadhi to Gokuleshwar. It takes about 8 hours to reach Gokuleshwar. Therefore, early in the morning we will be taken to the bus stand to catch a bus to Gokuleshwar. Leaving the terai plains of Dhangadhi, the bus heads towards the hilly region of the far-western region, on a Mahakali Highway. The breakfast will be served in a tea house or a local restaurant somewhere along the highway. After about 4 hours of uphill drive, the bus will stop at Dadeldhura for lunch. Dadeldhura is a very beautiful town in the far western region of Nepal. It is also known as the Queen of Hills, as the area flaunts beautiful hills of the region. After lunch, the bus continues on a winding highway accompanied by beautiful views of the far western Himalayas, Chamelyia Valley, rivers and sparse settlement exhibiting traditional houses and a few roadside teahouses. We will reach Gokuleshwar in the afternoon. If you are not tired, around the evening, you can also explore the Gokuleshwar area. Overnight in a basic lodge in Gokuleshwar. (B,L,D)    

Day 04: Drive form Gokuleshwar to Latinath (1,004m) 2 hours and trek to Paribagar (1,770m/5,807ft) 1 hour

Our destination today is Paribagar, therefore, after breakfast, without any delay, we will be transferred to the bus station to catch a bus to Latinath (the starting point of the Api Base Camp trek). About 2 hours drive on a road along the Chameliya River, will take us to Latinath. Along the way, you will also get a chance to see the far western region’s biggest hydropower station. We will have our lunch and then hike to the beautiful Paribagar village. From Latinath, it will take about 1 hour to reach Paribagar. As we reach the village, we will rest for some time and set off to explore the settlement of the village. Interaction with villagers will help understand their lifestyle, settlement and their culture. Overnight in homestay in Paribagar. (B,L,D)

Day 05: Trek from Paribagar to Makarigadi (1,470m/4,822ft) 5 hours

Makrigadi is today’s destination. After breakfast, without wasting much time, we will leave Paribagar for Makarigadi. The trail makes its way through traditional agricultural terraces, traditional mid-hill villages and very beautiful land of the Far-Western region, before we stop for lunch at one of the trail-side teahouse. After lunch, the upward walk continues on a trail along the Chameliya River that makes its way through the sub tropical and sub alpine forest  to Makrigadi. About 2 hours hiking from  the lunch spot will finally bring us to the very beautiful village of Makrigadi. We will rest for some time and around the evening, explore the village, interact with the villagers and understand their settlement, lifestyle and culture. Overnight in a homestay in Makrigadi. Day 06: Trek from Makrigadi to Siti (2,254m/7,395ft) 8 hours

Siti is the destination set for today. After breakfast at Makrigadi, the trekking continues towards our today’s destination. From Makrigadi, a short but steep climb will first take us to the Chameliya River. We will cross the river and continue on a trail that climbs up the gorge, before continuing to Pato. Pato is our lunch spot. After lunch at Pato, we continue up on a gentle, yet steady trail till we reach the last ridge. From the ridge, a gentle downhill walk to bring us to the village of Siti. It requires about 8 hours to reach Siti from Makrigadi. Overnight in a homestay in Siti.  (B,L,D)

Day 07: Trek from Siti to Domal (2,950m/9,678ft) 7 hours

Domal is the destination set for today. It takes about 7 hours to reach Domal from Siti. Therefore, after breakfast at Siti, without any delay, we will start the day’s walk. The trail from Siti initially heads downhill to Khayekot, a very pretty village located on the bank of the Chameliya River. Khayekot is also the last permanent settlement of the  Chameliya Valley. We will have our lunch at Khayekot and then slowly hike up to Domal. Domal is considered a very sacred place in this area. It is also a place where the Chameliya River meets Rokap River. Due to lack of accommodation options, we will spend this night in a tented camp. (B,L,D)

Day 08: Trek from Domal to Dhaulo Odar (lower Api Base Camp) (3,548m/11,640ft) 5 hours

Dhaulo Odar or the lower Api Base Camp is the destination set for today. After breakfast at Domal, we will continue towards our destination. A steep climb from Domal will take us to the top. From the top, the trail continuing through the open pastures and alpine forest  is fairly easy. After about 5 hours walk from Domal, an open grassland surrounded by the forest of rhododendron forest, high mountains and a few caves comes into sight. This place is known as Daulo Odar or the lower Api Base Camp. The surrounding view is simply mesmerizing. He will set up our tent for overnight stay. Overnight in a tented camp in Daulo Odar. Day 09: Trek from Daulo Odar to Api Base Camp/Pilkandaha (3,861m/12,667ft) and back to Daulo Odar

Today, we finally reach the Api Base Camp. After breakfast, starting Daulo Odar, we will walk all the way up to the base camp of Mt. Api. It takes about 2 and a half hour to reach the base camp. A big open plateau surrounded by the mountains marks the base camp of Mt. Api. The view of Mt Api (7,132m), Mt. Nampa (6,929m) and Mt. Bobaye (6,808m) from the base camp are mesmerizing. We will spend some time celebrating the achievement, capturing pictures of the beautiful mountain from the base camp and then visit the source of the Chameliya River and a temple nearby. We will then have our packed lunch and head towards the holy lake. After spending some time near the lake , we will get back to Daulo Odar. Overnight in a tented camp in Daulo Odar. (B,L,D)

Day 10: Trek from Daulo Odar to Siti (2,258m/7,408ft) 6 hours

Having enjoyed the beautiful Mt. Api from its base camp, its now time to return. Therefore, after breakfast at Daulo Odar, leaving the beautiful views of the mountain and the alpine terrain and the vegetation behind, we head towards Siti. The trail first leads downhill to Khayekot, once again allowing us to enjoy alpine forest, open pastures, streams and grassland. We will stop for lunch at Khayekot. A steep ascent through terrace farms on the green hills will finally take us to the village of Siti. It takes about 6 hours to reach Siti from Daulo Odar. In the evening, you can enjoy the dinner prepared by the host family. Overnight in a homestay. (B,L,D)

Day 11: Trek from Siti to Makrigadi (1,470m/4,822ft) 6 hours

After breakfast at the homestay in Siti, a fairly easy climb will take us to the ridge above Siti. From the top, the trail along the ridge makes its way through the forest, agricultural fields and beautiful small villages to Pato. Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful Himalayan views of the Far Western region. At Pato, we will stop for some time for lunch. After lunch, Makrigadi is a steady descent from Pato. It takes about 6 hours to reach Makrigadi from Siti. In the evening, you can enjoy the very delicious dinner prepared by the host family. Overnight in a homestay in Makrigadi. (B,L,D)

Day 12: Trek from Makarigadi to Latinath (4 hour) and drive to Gokuleshwar (2 hour)

Today, after breakfast at Makrigadi, without any delay, we trek towards Latinath. A pleasant downhill walk for about 4 hours from  Makrigadi will bring us to Latinath. En route, we will also pass through the settlement of Paribagar, where earlier we spent a night, while heading towards the base camp of Mt. Api. From Latinath, we will hike to a very famous Hindu temple of this region. After visiting the temple, we will hike down to Latinath, have lunch and then catch a bus to Gokuleshwar. 2 hour bus ride through the very scenic terrain, will take us to Gokuleshwar. From the bus station,  we will be taken to the lodge booked for us in Gokuleshwar.  Overnight in a very basic lodge at Gokuleshwar. (B,L,D)

Day 13: Drive from Gokuleshwar to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 9 hours

Today, we drive from Gokuleshwar to Dhangadhi. Its about 9 hours ride, therefore, after breakfast at Gokuleshwar, we will be taken to the bus station to catch a local bus to Dhangadhi. The bus heading south on a Mahakali Highway, stops at Dadeldhura for lunch. After lunch, the bus continues towards the terai plains of Dhangadhi, leaving the hilly region of the far –western region. Along the way, for one more time you will get a change to enjoy the spending view of the green hills, terrace farms, river, roadside small hotels and traditional settlement of people. We will reach Dhangadhi in the evening. From the bus station in Dhangadhi, we will be transferred to a tourist standard hotel for overnight stay. (B,L,D)

Day 14: Fly from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Today is the last day of the trip. After breakfast at the hotel and check out formalities, you will be transferred to the airport in Dhangadhi to board a flight to Kathmandu. It takes about one hour and fifteen minutes to reach Kathmandu from Dhangadhi. It’s a very scenic flight. From the airport in Kathmandu, a company  representative will transfer you to the hotel in Kathmandu in a private vehicle. The remaining day can be spent as per your wish. Overnight in a tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu. (B,L,D)

Day 15: Departure day

It's time to bid farewell to Nepal and Nepalese, therefore, is your flight is scheduled in the morning, after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport. However, if  your flight is scheduled in the evening, you can spend the day exploring popular markets and shopping in Kathmandu. After the shopping, you will be transferred to the airport from the hotel as per your flight schedule. Nevertheless, if you are looking to add some more days to your Nepal trip, we can suggest as well as make the arrangement of day trips and adventure activities in Nepal.

(Please Note: The Api Base Camp trip in Nepal is also possible with arrival and departure from Delhi. Transportation from Delhi to Dhangadhi and vice versa is on a local bus. Private vehicle can also be arranged, but at extra cost. The itinerary from Dhangadhi to Api Base Camp and back will remain unchanged.)

Api Base Camp Trek Information

Travel Insurance:

If you are planning the Api Base Camp Trek in the Far-Western region of Nepal, then getting a travel insurance necessary. The insurance policy should cover all extra expenditure that might occur as a result of various health related issues, injuries or accidents, including ambulance, helicopter rescue; other  medical treatment costs, like hospital charges, cost of the medicine and doctor’s fees as well as death and repatriation cost. Additionally, the policy should cover the cost of all extra activities that you are planning to undertake, during your stay in Nepal. Nevertheless, the policy should also cover the cost of misplaced luggage, theft and liability and cancellations.

Health, fitness and experience requirements:

Despite being a remote trek in Nepal, the Api Base Camp trek is easily attainable, if you are physically fit, have good stamina (some days require long hours of walking) and are in a good health.

Nevertheless, seeking advice, medication and permission from your doctor or General Practitioner is highly recommended.  While seeking advice, it is also recommended to consult regarding the necessary guide walks and exercises, before the trip.

Although this trekking in Nepal does not require any prior experience, running, cycling,a few hours of uphill walking or prior hiking, trekking or camping experience can always boost the success rate.

Note:

We kindly request you to submit your medical fitness certificate (which must include your present health condition, medical situation, preceding illness, and the medications you are taking), before booking the packages. We also request you to be honest so that we can get prepared and take quick action in case of any emergencies. Nevertheless, we run regular first aid courses for all our trekking guides so that they can provide the first aid treatment in emergencies.

 Accommodation and Food:

Tourist standard hotels, basic lodges, Homestays and camping are the accommodation options during the trip. Tourist standard hotels are the accommodation options in the cities like Kathmandu and Dhangadhi. However, during the trekking, basic lodges/Homestays and camping are the accommodation options. The rooms are usually booked on a twin-share basis,where you  will have to share your room with another member of your group. Triple share can be arranged on request. However, if you are looking for a single supplement, extra charges will be applicable. Apart from the tourist standard hotels, the accommodation amenities and benefits will be very basic. It is recommended to bring your own sleeping bag.

Typical Nepali food will be served, during the trek. Western food will be served on request, subject to availability and in the cities. In remote areas and during the trekking, the food served will be very basic, made by local people using local ingredients as per the teahouse menu, but will be plentiful.

Transportation:

Domestic flights will be used as a transportation option from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi and vice versa. Local bus will be used from Dhangadhi to Latinath and vice versa. Private vehicles will be used as airport transfers, from airport to hotel and vice versa.

Communication:

Landline phones and internet facilities are available in the hotel in cities. However, at places where landline phones are not available, the customers can use the cell phone provided to the guide by the company. These cell phones are used by the guide maintain regular communication with the off-site team in Kathmandu. This phone can be used by the customer to send messages or call in the case of emergencies. The messages will be delivered to the concerned person from the office in Kathmandu.

Health and Medical Facility:

Cities like Kathmandu and Dhangadhi have good health facilities. Places further from Dhangadhi, till the base camp of Mt. Api, have very less health and medical facilities. Therefore, we request you either bring or buy your regular medicines in Kathmandu. Moreover, our team leaders will carry a first aid kit to help trekkers in case of any emergency.

What are the best seasons to plan this trek?

The Api Base Camp Trek can be planned any time of the year. However, spring and autumn are considered the best season in terms of trail, weather, climate, and visibility. Winters are very cold and the trails are affected by the rain during the monsoon season. Therefore, it’s always good to plan this trek, during the best season of the year –spring and autumn.

What should I bring?

Along with warm clothes you will also need other equipment for the sufficient protection of your body. Below is the list of necessary items that you need to pack before commencing your trek.

Head- Hat (with a wide brim), Sunglasses (with UV protection), Sunscreen lotion and Lip balm

Upper body- T-shirts (2), light and expedition weight thermal tops, Fleece jacket and pullover, Fleece wind-stopper jacket (Optional), waterproof (preferably breathable fabric) shell jacket, down vest/jacket (included)

Hands - Lightweight gloves, heavy-weight gloves/mittens with a waterproof outer shell

Lower body - Underwear (4), hiking shorts (2), lightweight cotton long pants, light and expedition weight thermal bottoms, Fleece or wool pants, waterproof (preferably breathable fabric) shell pants

Feet - Thin, light-wear inner socks (4), thick, warm wool hiking socks (4), hiking boots with spare laces, camp shoes (sneakers and/or sandals), gaiters (only for winter)

Passport and Visa Information:

It is very easy to obtain Nepal’s visa. You may either apply for a visa at your nearest Nepalese Embassy/Consulate or Mission offices in your own country or you can buy this upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. To apply for a visa, you need 2 passport size photographs, Visa fees in US dollars and your passport that is valid for at least 6 months before the trip. However, nationals of SAARC countries (India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Afghanistan) and China do not require any visa to visit Nepal. Transit visa for foreign nationalities is only provided for 3 days. Therefore, visa is required for longer stays.
