The Makalu region is an absolutely amazing still very untouched area in the northwestern corner of the Sankhuwasabha district. To the west, it is bordered by the Everest region, to the north by Tibet, to the east by the Arun River and to the south by the Sabha River.

The world’s fifth highest peak, Makalu stands in the Himalaya about 10 miles southeast of Mount Everest, near the border between Nepal and Tibet. Its size alone is impressive, and the shape of a perfect pyramid makes this mountain all the more spectacular. Its sharp, ridged, snow-covered peak rises 27,825 feet (8,481 m.). In 1955, French mountaineers led by Jean Franco became the first men to reach the top. The name of the mountain was probably taken from the Sanskrit word Maha-Kala, which means “Big Black.” This also was an alternate name for Shiva – one of the important gods of Hinduism. Shiva, though basically an evil deity, is at other times gentle and kind-hearted. The mountain has another name in the local dialect, Kumba karna, which means “The Giant.”

Day 04: Trek to Num (1,560m/5119ft) 6-7 hours

We start early in the morning and head towards Num right after a warm breakfast. A moderately paced walk through the picturesque villages and lush mountain forests will take us to Num. A ridge line with great views on both side and perched on the end, this is Num for us.

Day 05: Trek to Seduwa (1,500m/4922 ft) 6-7 hours

Seduwa village is situated in parallel to Num. A steep descent down through the forests and terraced plots of land takes us to Barun River. We cross the river and follow an equally steep ascent up the other side again. Often quite hot - the forest on the valley sides offer a bit of shade. This is where Makalu Barun National Park starts and where we register our permits. We camp right at the top of the village.

Day 06: Seduwa to Tashigaon (2,100m/6890 ft) 4-5 hours

Ascend the ridge bounded by the Ipsuwa Khola on the west and Kasuwa Khola to the east. Crossing the hillside through quiet villages and passing by small paddy fields, we reach the exotic village of Tashi Gaon. Once there, we are surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan panorama.

From here it’s a short way down to Khongma.

Day 08: Acclimatization Day

We rest for the day and acclimatize ourselves with the atmospheric level in the high terrains before we go further up. The day off will allow some bodily rest before we take on crossing of the Shipton La the next day. For those who wish to explore the nearby surrounding can walk around the area.

Day 09: Trek to Dobate 6-7 hours

Climb towards the summit of the Shipton La which takes a few hours to reach. From Dobate, we pass through the rhododendron forest which leads to the Barun River and the upper reaches of the valley. We should be very careful during the first two hours of trek as it is steep and arduous with possibility of rocks falls and landslides during the trek. We then take a pleasant walk, slowly gaining altitude until we arrive at Yangri Kharka (pasture land) situated at the base of the valley.

Day 11: Trek to Langmale Kharka (4410m/14468ft) 5/6 hours

Following a moderate walk to the valley, we pass through yak pastures, lush forests and boulder fields. The valley walls tower imposingly above us during the start of the trek.  We pass Merek as we make our way further up and notice a significance rise in the scenic Himalayan views.

Mount Makalu comes into view as we approach Shershong. Majestic Himalayan panorama surrounds us as we make our way to the camp.

Day 13: Explore Makalu Base Camp (4870m/15978ft) 6-7 hours

The Base Camp is a rocky barren place with large Barun Glacier beyond, where we get the chance to take in the breath taking views of the summit. From here we will have a magnificent south face view of Makalu and see the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse. We can explore the surrounding lakes, glaciers and go for a short trek up from here if we wish or celebrate our accomplishment at the camp itself.

Day 14: Trek to Yangri Kharka 6-7 hours

We descend down from the base camp and and take our last glimpse of Makalu before turning the corner and heading back. On our way down, we pass through Shershong, Langmale Kharka, Merek and descend down the valley finally stopping at Yangri Kharka.

Makalu Base Camp Trek Information

Travel Insurance:
For everyone planning their next trek in the Himalayas of Nepal, it is highly recommended that you get a travel insurance that covers added expenses that might result due to various health issues, injuries or accidents (together with air ambulance, helicopter rescue and other treatment cost). Your insurance policy should cover up your entire activities that you are planning to accomplish throughout your stay in Nepal. In addition to this, the policy  should also cover death, misplaced luggage, theft and liability, cancellations, medical treatment (counting hospital charges, cost of the medicine, doctor’s fees) as well as repatriation cost. Also, most of the trekking trails in Nepal take you above the altitude of 5000m, therefore, you also need to ensure that your insurance policy covers treks that go over 5000m. In short, its client himself/herself has to take the responsibility regarding unforeseen expenses during the trip.

Health, fitness and experience requirements:
Altitudes in the Himalayas of Nepal definitely demand excellent stamina, tough determination, and the best health condition. Some sections of the trek are quite demanding and some days might even require 8-9 hours of walking.

Though trek to the Makalu Base Camp is considered moderate and easily attainable, it is highly suggested to seek advice, medications and permission from your doctor before scheduling your trek.  It is also recommended to take expert guidance from your local General Practitioner regarding necessary guide walks prior to your trek in Nepal. In the absence of GP, seeking advice from travel clinic is also considered as a very good idea.

Moreover, the good news is that, no technical skill is required to plan your trek or any other exploratory  trips in Nepal. However, your prior hiking or camping experience will definitely be considered as a plus point. Also, a few weeks of regular exercise and jogging is recommended before the trip to build up the required stamina.

Note: We kindly request you to inform us regarding your present health condition, medical situation, preceding illnesses and the medications you are taking. We expect you to be honest regarding these issues, so that we can get prepared for emergencies.

Food and Accommodation:
We always make sure that our customers get the right value for their money. Therefore, we always attempt to make some of the best arrangements for our customers. To ensure a comfortable stay, we book tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu before and after your trek. Normally, the rooms are twin share, where you will have to share your room with another member of your group. However, this totally depends on the size of your group and the availability of rooms in the hotel. On request, triple share can also be arranged. Moreover, if you are looking for a single supplement room, extra charges will be applied. During the trek, your stay is arranged in a local guesthouse or lodges with shared amenities. You can also enjoy a hot shower in these lodges. In the absence of shower few buckets of hot water can also be arranged on request. A full board meal (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and tea &coffee) will be provided from the teahouse menu during the entire trek. Usually, porridge, toast or chapattis, oatmeal and local bread are served for breakfast. The food served for lunch and dinner are simply great.
