The Khaptad Trek in the Far-Western Region, Nepal  is an opportunity. An opportunity, that one should grab as soon as one gets it. Khaptad trekking in Nepal, is basically an adventure walk in and around the Khaptad National Park. It’s an opportunity because the area of 225km2 allows you to experience the landscape consisting of steep slopes, streams and moorland; 567 species of flora and vegetations including Chir pine, rhododendron, oak, alder, Himalayan fir and hemlock; 23 species of mammals, 287 species of birds, 23 species of amphibians and reptiles and a variety of birds; religious sites like the Ashram of Khaptad Baba, Ganga Darsha, Tribeni, Saharsa Linga and a few very important lakes, all in one go.  Apart from these attractions of the Khaptad National Park, the trekkers can also enjoy additional attractions, like Jhokhar Lake, Botanical Garden and the Aircraft Museum in Dhangadhi; traditional settlement of the people, their remote lifestyle, culture, tradition and hospitality. 11 days Khaptad Trek  is AME’s standard package. No prior experience is required to plan this trek. Any physically fit person can attempt this trek. The maximum altitude attained during this trekking is 3,300m, therefore, the chances of getting altitude sickness are almost null. Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

Welcome to Nepal. One of our company representatives will be awaiting your arrival outside the baggage hall in the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. This person will greet you and take you and escort you to the hotel booked in Kathmandu. After reaching the hotel you can freshen up, rest for some time and then get ready for the meeting that will be conducted at our office in the afternoon. In the meeting we will brief you regarding the trek and introduce you to your guide and other team members. After the meeting we will take you for a welcome dinner, where you can enjoy typical Nepali cuisine and cultural show. After the dinner you will be taken back to the hotel for overnight stay. However, if your flight arrives late, the dinner and the meeting will be scheduled for the next day. (D)

Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 1 hour 15 min

Today after breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the domestic terminal of the Tribhuvan International Airport to board a flight to Dhangadhi. Approximately it takes about one hour and a fifteen minute to reach Dhangadhi from Kathmandu. It’s a scenic flight. From the Airport in Dhangadhi, you will be transferred to the hotel in Dhangadhi. Freshen up and then we will set off to cycle trip to Jhokhar Lake and Botanical garden. On the way, we will also visit the Aircraft Museum, where you can enjoy the exhibition of photo gallery of famous tourist destinations around the world, tourist destinations in the far west Nepal and the display of the evolution of the aircraft from the time of Wright Brothers till date. After visiting the aircraft, we will come back to the hotel for overnight stay. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 03: Drive from Dhanghadi to Silghadi (1,340m/4,396ft) (8-9 hour)

After breakfast at the hotel, we will now be taken to the bus stop in Dhangadi to catch a bus to Silgadhi. It takes about 8-9 hour to reach Silgadhi from Dhangdhi. Although the journey is a long one, the beautiful scenery will keep your eyes and camera busy. Most part of the journey is accompanied by green hills, trees and sparse settlement. The road is both scenic and thrilling. At places you will also get to enjoy some of the steepest hills that will make your heart beat faster. After a lunch break en route, the bus will continue to Silgadhi. We reach Silgadhi only around the evening. From the bus stop  at Silgadhi, we will be transferred to the hotel. The journey is tiring, therefore, we will send the rest of the time resting and preparing for the next day’s walk. Overnight in a guest house in Silghadi. (B,L,D)

Day 04: Trek from Silghadi to Jhingrana (2,250m/7,381ft)

The ultimate walk to Khaptad begins after breakfast at Silgadhi. Leaving the main road and the Silgadhi Bazaar behind, we will first hike up to the top of Silgadhi. As we ascend the height, we will be greeted by the very beautiful surrounding views as well as the wild berries. The hike isn’t very tiring, but gentle. About four hours of gentle hike from the Silgadhi bazaar will take us to a village called Baghlekh, where you can see a traditional settlement with a few teahouses. About 3 hours of easy walk from Baglekh will take us to Jhingrana, which is also the entry point of the Khaptad National park. The night will be spent in a basic teahouse  in Jhingrana. Since the teahouse is very basic, we recommend you to bring your own sleeping bag to protect yourself from the cold. (B,L,D)

Day 05: Trek from Jhingrana to Khaptad National Park 8-9 hour

Breakfast at Jhingrana and we will continue towards our destination, the Khaptad National Park. The uphill trail, accompanied by beautiful wildflowers and the beautiful scenery, will take us to Bichpani. The top greets us with a beautiful view of the Himalayas and Khaptad. After enjoying the view, we will enjoy typical Nepali lunch at Bichpani. After lunch at Bichpani, we will now continue towards the headquarter of the Khaptad National Park for an overnight stay. Along the way, we can enjoy beautiful pasture lands, Tribeni, where people come during the festival of Ganga Dashara, a few small lakes. Shortly after enjoying these sites, we reach the Khaptad National Park Headquarter located near the Khaptad Army Barrack. Overnight is a basic guest house or in a tented camp in the Khaptad National Park headquarter. (B,L,D)

Day 06: Explore Khaptad National Park area

Today we will wake up earlier than usual. We will then hike to the sunrise view point in Khaptad to enjoy the sunrise view.  We will then get back to the guest house, have breakfast and now hike to the Ashram of Khaptad Baba, which is a meditation zone located in the middle of the forest. Khaptad Baba a well known spiritual saint, a doctor and a researcher spent more than 50 years as a hermit in this area. This park was also established on the advice of Khaptad Baba. We will explore the peaceful Kuti premises, get some information about Khaptad Baba, capture photos and enjoy the surrounding views. After exploring the site, in the evening, we will hike up to the Ghodedawan, which is the largest pasture in the Khaptad National Park and Nagdhunga. After spending some, enjoying these sites, we will now get back to the guest house for overnight stay. The night will either be spent in the guest house or a tented camp.  (B,L,D)

Day 07: Explore Khaptad National Park area (day 2)

Today is the 2nd exploration day. After breakfast at the hotel, we start our day with a hike to SahasraLinga (3200m). Sahasralinga is the highest altitude attained, during the Khaptad Trek. Sahasralinga is famous for the temple of Sahasra Linga, the special gateway and the natural formation of the lingas and deities. We will explore these areas, enjoy packed lunch and get back to the accommodation. On the way we also get a chance to enjoy various wildlife and birds. The evening can be spent as per your wish, that is, either exploring the area or resting at the accommodation. The night will either be spent in a guest house, or in a tented camp.

Day 08: Trek from Khaptad to Chainpur (1,296m/4,251ft)

After spending three nights and two full days in exploring the attractions of the Khaptad National Park, it’s now time to leave Khaptad. Therefore,  bidding farewell to Khaptad, we will for leave for Chainpur, after breakfast. The trail heading north, through a number of traditional villages descends to Bajhang. The downward walk continues for about 7-8 hour till Tamil. Here, the trail meets the motorable road. Therefore, we will now drive to Chainpur. We will reach Chainpur in the evening. Overnight in a tourist standard hotel in Chainpur. (B,L,D)

Day 09: Drive from Chainpur to Dhangadhi (109m/357ft) 10-12 hours

Today, we drive from Chainpur to Dhangadhi. It’s about 10-12 hour drive. Therefore, we leave as early as possible. From the hotel in Chainpur, we will be driven to the bus station, where we will catch a bus to Dhangadhi. The bus continues south, stops twice for breakfast and lunch and again continues to Dhangadhi. The entire road is very beautiful and scenic. Although the journey is long, the scenic view will keep your eyes busy. Finally, we reach Dhangadhi and spend the night in a tourist standard hotel in Dhangadhi.  (B,L,D) 

Day 10: Fly from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft) 1 hour 15 mins

Today leaving Dhangadhi, we fly back to Kathmandu. After breakfast at the hotel, we will be driven to the airport, to catch a flight to Kathmandu. After, one hour and 15 min fight, above the beautiful landscape, the plane lands on the airport in Kathmandu. From the airport, you will be driven to the hotel in Kathmandu. The remaining day can be spent either resting at the hotel, or visiting the markets of Kathmandu. Overnight in a tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu. (B)

Day 11: Departure day

Today is the last day of the trip. Therefore, if your flight is scheduled in the morning, one of the company representatives will transfer you to the airport, according to your flight schedule. However, if your flight is scheduled in the evening, you have the whole day to explore the markets of Kathmandu and collect souvenir for your friends and family. Moreover, if you are looking to extend your holiday, we can suggest as well as make arrangements of short trips and adventure activities to suit your need, time and budget.

Khaptad Trek Information

Travel Insurance:

It is mandatory to get a travel insurance if you are planning the Khaptad Trek in Far-West, Nepal. Your travel insurance should cover all additional expenses that might occur as a result of injuries or accidents (including ambulance, helicopter rescue, and other treatment cost) and various other health related issues. The policy should also cover the cost of all extra activities that you are planning to undertake, during your stay in Nepal, plus the cost of misplaced luggage, theft and liability, cancellations, medial treatment (hospital charges, cost of the medicine and doctor’s fee), death and the repatriation cost as well.

Health, fitness and experience requirements:

 Although Khaptad Trek is a remote trekking in Nepal, it is easily attainable. Therefore, any physically fit person with good stamina (some day require  a 8-9 hour walking) and health can successfully complete this trek with ease. Nevertheless, seeking advice, medication and permission from your doctor and in the absence of the doctor, seeking advice from the local General Practitioner is highly recommended. While seeking advice from a GP, it is also recommended to consult regarding the necessary guide walks, before planning the trek.  

This trekking does not require any prior hiking, trekking and camping experience, however, running, cycling and a few hours of uphill hiking, before the trek can always aid in the success of this trek.


We kindly request you to submit your medical fitness certificate (which must include your present health condition, medical situation, preceding illness, and the medications you are taking), before booking the packages. We also request you to be honest so that we can get prepared and take quick action in case of any emergencies. Nevertheless, we run regular first aid courses for all our trekking guides so that they can provide the first aid treatment in emergencies.

 Accommodation and Meal:

Accommodation in cities like Kathmandu, Dhading and Chainpur is arranged in a 3 start to tourist standard hotels. However, in the other night stops, accommodations are arranged in a very basic lodge/guest house. Usually the rooms are booked on a twin-share basis with shared amenities. Triple share can also be arranged on request. However, if you are looking for a single supplement, extra charges will be applicable. Hotel and room amenities in the cities will be tourist standard, however, during the other time, the amenities will be very basic. It is recommended to bring your own sleeping bag.

The food served during the trek will be typical Nepali, very basic and made using local ingredients, but will be plentiful. Western meals will also be served, upon request, in cities, if available. All meals (Breakfast, Lunch,Dinner) will be served during the trek and only breakfast will be served before and after the trek.    


Domestic flights will be used to fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadi and back to Kathmandu.Local buses will be used from Dhangadhi to Silgadhi and Chainpur to Dhangadhi. Comfortable airport transfers will be used to and from the airport in Kathmandu and Dhangadhi.

Communication facility:

Landline phones are available in all the cities. In places where land line phones are not available, our customers can use the cell phone provided to our guides to either call, or send a message to the off-site team in Kathmandu. Your message will be delivered to the concerned person from the office in Kathmandu.

Health and medical facilities:

Cities like Katmandu, Dhangadhi and Chainpur have good health facilities. However, we request you to either bring or buy your regular medicines in Kathamndu, before the trek to be on a safe side. Our team leader, however, will carry a first aid kit to help trekkers in the case of emergencies.

What are the best seasons to plan this trek?

The Khaptad Trek can be planned any time of the year. However, spring and autumn are considered the best season in terms of trail, weather, climate, and visibility. Winters are very cold and the trails are affected by the rain during the monsoon season. Therefore, its always good to plan this trek, during the best season of the year –spring and autumn.

What should I bring?

Along with warm clothes you will also need other equipment for the sufficient protection of your body. Below is the list of necessary items that you need to pack before commencing your trek.

Head- Hat (with a wide brim), Sunglasses (with UV protection), Sunscreen lotion and Lip balm

Upper body- T-shirts (2), light and expedition weight thermal tops, Fleece jacket and pullover, Fleece wind-stopper jacket (Optional), waterproof (preferably breathable fabric) shell jacket, down vest/jacket (included)

Hands - Lightweight gloves, heavy-weight gloves/mittens with a waterproof outer shell

Lower body - Underwear (4), hiking shorts (2), lightweight cotton long pants, light and expedition weight thermal bottoms, Fleece or wool pants, waterproof (preferably breathable fabric) shell pants

Feet - Thin, light-wear inner socks (4), thick, warm wool hiking socks (4), hiking boots with spare laces, camp shoes (sneakers and/or sandals), gaiters (only for winter)

Passport and Visa Information:

It is very easy to obtain Nepal’s visa. You may either apply for a visa at your nearest Nepalese Embassy/Consulate or Mission offices in your own country or you can buy this upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. To apply for a visa, you need 2 passport size photographs, Visa fees in US dollars and your passport that is valid for at least 6 months before the trip. However, nationals of SAARC countries (India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Afghanistan) and China do not require any visa to visit Nepal. Transit visa for foreign nationalities is only provided for 3 days. Therefore, visa is required for longer stays.
