Chitwan National Park, located in the subtropical Terai region, is Nepal's lowland jungle that is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and well-preserved ecosystems. Established in 1973, it’s the first national park in Nepal and one of the two national parks declared the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal for its outstanding biodiversity and ecological value. This national park in Nepal provides home to some of the rarest and the most iconic wildlife in South Asia, including One-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, gharial and mugger crocodiles, sloth bears and over 500 species of sedentary as well as migratory birds.

This 3-day safari experience offers a rare opportunity to explore one of Asia’s finest wildlife sanctuaries. From jeep/elephant safaris and canoe rides to guided jungle walks, you’ll have ample opportunity to encounter a spectacular variety of land and water animals and aves. In addition to wildlife, the trip also offers rich cultural immersion through visits to traditional Tharu villages and a vibrant Tharu cultural show. Optional stops at the Elephant Breeding Center, Crocodile Breeding Center or a tranquil birdwatching session add even more depth to the experience.

Therefore, whether you are looking to add a short adventure to your trek or explore Nepal’s southern plains more deeply, this safari makes a perfect add-on. This trip begins and ends in Kathmandu by road, but flexible departure options from Pokhara, Lumbini or Birgunj can also be arranged on request. The package price is based on three star accommodation in Chitwan and luxury tourist bus transportation to and from Kathmandu. However, if you are looking for an option of private transportation, flight or upgraded accommodation, the arrangements can be made. Flights to and from Chitwan are only available from Kathmandu and Pokhara.

The best time to plan this jungle safari in Nepal is October to June. Monsoon, June-September is not considered very suitable due to the monsoon.

If you are a birdwatcher, nature photographer as well as wildlife enthusiast, this trip in Nepal is perfect for you. The trip is suitable for solo or group travelers or the one looking for a short family getaway. Also, if you are planning a short relaxing trip before or after your trekking trip in Nepal, this makes an ideal option.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Drive to Chitwan and Explore Chitwan

Your Chitwan Jungle Safari tour begins with a drive to Chitwan. The Kathmandu to Chitwan journey will be in a luxury tourist bus. These buses leave the tourist bus station in Kathmandu at 7:00AM. Therefore, at 6:30 AM, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the tourist bus station located in Sorhakhutte, Kathmandu to board your bus. The journey typically takes 6 hours, if not disturbed by construction, natural disasters or traffic delays.

Leaving the bustling Kathmandu Valley, the route descends into the lush subtropical plains of the Terai region in Nepal. It’s about 150-170-kilometer drive (depending on the chosen route and your final destination within Chitwan), mostly on the Prithvi Highway, that snakes through the hills, small roadside settlements and important towns, such as Naubise, Malekhu and Mugling and forest, running along the gushing Trisuli River. This drive gives you the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views of river gorges and valleys, beautiful waterfalls, terraced hillsides with pretty little hamlets, farmlands and forest.

At Mugling, the highway splits. Now leaving the Prithvi Highway and following the Madan Ashrit Highway, you will continue to meet Mahendra Highway, before reaching Chitwan. Driving past a densely forested area, as you approach Chitwan, you can notice the flattening landscape and warmer and humid air. The hills disappear and soon you are surrounded by rice fields and banana plantations.

On this journey, the bus will stop at one of the highway restaurants where you can buy snacks, and a few other stops for toilet breaks.

In Chitwan, one of the hotel representatives will come to receive you at the tourist bus station. You will be transferred to the hotel, where you will check in, meet your nature guide and enjoy lunch. After lunch, your guide will take you for a village walk around the national park area, which offers a glimpse into the  local life of Tharu (ethnic group in Nepal) people. This village walk is designed to end at the sun set view point for you to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the sun setting over the plains. Having enjoyed the view, for dinner. You will also enjoy a traditional Tharu cultural show either before or after dinner. Overnight in a hotel in Chitwan.

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Please note: Private transportation and domestic flights can be arranged at additional cost. Flights to Chitwan are only available from Kathmandu and Pokhara. There is only one flight, every day, from Pokhara to Chitwan.

Day 02: Jungle Safari in the Chitwan National Park

Today you will spend the entire day exploring the wildlife in the Chitwan National Park. You will go on safaris, such as elephant/jeep safari, canoe safari and walking safari and take a quick trip to elephant or crocodile breeding center.

Beginning the day after breakfast at the hotel, you will either go on an elephant or jeep safari (depending on your choice). The duration and coverage area of the elephant safari are comparatively smaller than those of the jeep safari. Therefore, if you are looking to go deep in the jungle, choose jeep safari. After the elephant/jeep safari, you will get back to the hotel for lunch. After lunch, it's time for a canoe (a dugout wooden boats) ride to explore the national park’s aquatic (reptile and amphibians) and bird life. It’s a very serene and immersive  experience that allows you to glide down the river spotting wildlife such as mugger and gharial crocodiles, rhinos, deer, monkeys and birds like kingfisher, egrets, storks, hornbills and cormorants. Beautiful forested riverbanks, grasslands and the occasional sandbar beautifully pass by as you enjoy the ride down the river. The canoe ride will be followed by a jungle walk to experience the ground-level view of the park’s landscape and wildlife. After walking safari, you  will wrap up the day’s activity by visiting a crocodile or an elephant breeding center. This visit offers insight into the park’s conservation efforts. You will then get back to the hotel for overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 03: Bird Watching tour and Return to Kathmandu

Chitwan National Park provides home to over 500 species of birds and the best time to spot the maximum number is either in the morning or late afternoon. Thus, the bird-watching trip begins before breakfast. You will go on a walking tour with your guide to the areas allocated by the national park for bird watching. You might not be able to spot all 500, but will spot a number that is otherwise hard to spot in one place. You will spend a few hours exploring and photographing them and get back to the hotel for breakfast. The tourist buses leave Pokhara around 7:30 AM. Therefore, after a quick breakfast, you will be transferred to the tourist bus station, where you will board a bus to Kathmandu. The bus will follow the same route to get you back to Kathmandu.  Your tour with Adventure Mountain Explore Treks and Expedition ends with your bus dropping you off at Machhapokhari, Kathmandu. From here, please take a taxi to your hotel.
