Int’l airlines adding more Kathmandu flights

As air seat demand soars, international carriers have started adding more flights to Kathmandu.

Malaysia Airlines and Etihad Airways have already announced operating twice daily flights to Kathmandu. According to CAAN, Malaysia Airlines will be starting its double daily flights from Oct 26, while Etihad has announced doubling its daily Abu Dhabi-Kathmandu service to twice daily from Nov 1. Meanwhile, India’s low-cost carrier Spice Jet has applied to operate its Kolkata-Kathmandu flight via Bagdogra while Dhaka-based United Airways has doubled its flight frequency on its Kathmandu sector.

Subash Jha, manager, flight schedule and permission section of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), said that Spice Jet had planned to connect Kathmandu thrice a week from Nov 15. United has been conducting two daily flights from Sept 19. The carrier started its Kathmandu service on Jan 4, 2010. Another Bangladeshi carrier, GMG Airlines, has recently discontinued its Kathmandu service.

Similarly, Air Arabia has added a flight to cater to the rush of Nepali migrant workers as well as tourists. With the additional flight, Air Arabia will be operating 18 flights per week. Travel agencies have reported that all international airlines serving Nepal are fully booked with inbound travellers for October, while a few seats are available for November. The period September-November is Nepal’s peak tourist season which accounts for as much as 40 percent of the year’s international tourist arrivals.

International airlines serving Nepal saw a 5.66 percent year-on-year rise in passenger carriage in the first six months of 2013. During the period January-June, the 27 foreign carriers and two Nepali airlines flew 1.517 million travellers, or 81,306 more than before, said Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

THAI unveils promo fares Thai Airways has announced several promotional fares under its website sales offer. The website sales offer is available at thaiairways.com, and the offer will last up to March 2014. The carrier said that the promotional fares have been introduced to boost the market and attract flyers.

The carrier said that it had been supporting the Nepali tourism industry and would continue to do so in the future. Thai Airways flew 165,944 travellers in 2012.
